On 25 March 2026, the MERIDIAN project (CEF Transport) will actively contribute to the joint event “Digitalising the Road Last Mile for Ports and Multimodal Freight Terminals. Data sharing and interoperability for efficient freight flows”, hosted in Trieste by the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, in cooperation with the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Interporto di Trieste, and held under the auspices of the EUSAIR Strategy.
The conference will address a key operational and strategic challenge for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T): improving the management of road freight flows at core nodes, particularly ports and multimodal freight terminals. Increasing traffic volumes, congestion at access points and fragmented data exchange require interoperable digital systems and coordinated governance approaches across corridors and logistics nodes.
MERIDIAN contributes to this discussion from a corridor-level perspective. The project supports the digitalisation of mobility systems along key TEN-T corridors by promoting the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), digital infrastructure and enhanced traffic management services. Through coordinated cross-border cooperation between road authorities and infrastructure managers, MERIDIAN strengthens corridor performance, improves safety and enhances the efficiency and sustainability of freight transport flows across Europe.
The event programme will combine institutional contributions, keynote speeches and operational best practices. In particular, keynote interventions will address public investments driving digital transformation and real-life applications such as the Port of Hamburg’s integration of real-time slot management, intelligent traffic control and interoperable data interfaces for landside traffic management.
A dedicated session will highlight the synergy among European and national funding instruments, bringing together experiences not only from MERIDIAN, but also from ACCESSMILE (Interreg Central Europe), MILEPORT and PRESPORT (Interreg Italy–Croatia) and ELODIE (Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan). The discussion will demonstrate how CEF, Interreg and national recovery funding instruments can work in complementarity to accelerate digital transformation and strengthen interoperability between corridors, ports and multimodal freight terminals.
The conference will conclude with a round table discussion gathering corridor managers, port authorities and logistics operators to debate operational experiences and future perspectives for digital road freight transport.
The event will be organised in a hybrid format, allowing participation both in person and online. The working languages will be Italian and English, with simultaneous interpretation provided.
