Save the date: Digitalising the Road Last Mile for Ports and Multimodal Freight Terminals

On 25 March 2026, the MERIDIAN project will take part in the joint event “Digitalising the Road Last Mile for Ports and Multimodal Freight Terminals. Data sharing and interoperability for efficient freight flows”, hosted in Trieste by the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, in cooperation with the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Interporto di Trieste, and held under the auspices of the EUSAIR Strategy.

The event will provide an opportunity to discuss how digital solutions can improve the management of freight transport along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), with a particular focus on interoperability, data exchange and coordinated governance between corridors, ports and multimodal freight terminals.

MERIDIAN contributes to this discussion from a corridor perspective. The project supports the digitalisation of mobility systems along key TEN-T corridors by promoting the deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), digital infrastructure and enhanced traffic management services. Through coordinated cross-border cooperation between road authorities and infrastructure managers, MERIDIAN aims to improve traffic flow, increase safety and strengthen the efficiency and sustainability of freight transport across Europe.

While the event addresses road last-mile challenges in port and terminal environments, it also highlights the broader importance of corridor-level digitalisation. Efficient access to ports and multimodal freight terminals depends on well-managed road corridors, interoperable digital services and real-time information exchange. In this sense, MERIDIAN plays a key role in connecting corridor traffic management with local logistics nodes.

The conference will also foster dialogue and cross-fertilisation with complementary initiatives – including ACCESSMILE (Interreg Central Europe), MILEPORT and PRESPORT (Interreg Italy–Croatia), and ELODIE (Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan) – demonstrating how CEF, Interreg and national recovery funding instruments can work in synergy to accelerate digital transformation in freight transport.

By bringing together corridor managers, port authorities and terminal operators, the event will contribute to strengthening digital interoperability and coordinated governance across the Adriatic–Ionian macro-region, in line with TEN-T objectives and EUSAIR Pillar 2 “Connecting the Region”.

The event will be organised in a hybrid format, allowing participation both in person and online. The working languages will be Italian and English, with simultaneous interpretation provided.

Further details on the agenda and registration will be published soon.
