Invitation to the Smart Cycling Summit

Dear all,

Smart Cycling can play a significant role in achieving the EU’s goals for safe, sustainable and smart mobility, including substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and promoting cycling as a key component of multimodal transport systems.

Smart cycling refers to intelligent and cooperative systems (ITS and C-ITS), digital applications and digital services that make cycling safer and improve the cycling experience on the basis of cycling-relevant data, communication technologies and products and services based on these. Smart Cycling comprises both the smart solutions and the collection and use of cycling data. In the context of the smart city, it mainly refers to the interaction between infrastructure and bicycle. In the context of smart mobility, the bicycle is part of a combination of transport modes.

We would like to invite you to the Smart Cycling Summit 14 October  in Brussels. Please refer to the attached agenda for further details.

State Secretary Viktor Haase from the Ministry of Environment, Nature and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia is looking forward to meet you in Brussels.

We see that smart cycling technologies and applications have the potential to profoundly change cycling and increase the share of cycling in the modal split. The Smart Cycling Roadmap by MERIDIAN and MegaBITS outlines the steps that need to be taken to accelerate the implementation of smart cycling applications and unlock their full potential for the benefit of cyclists. Every sector, including smart cycling must contribute to achieving environmental goals.

Based on the very well established processes and standardisation activities for C-ITS and ITS we could commonly very quickly achieve a significant progress for a safer and more attractive cycling in Europe.

Many experts from the ITS community have already joined forces to work with us on this. Feel free to join in starting by attending the event in Brussels. Please forward this invitation to your network of ITS  and C-ITS for cycling stakeholders.

I am looking forward meeting you in Brussels
With my best regards
Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Stephanie Kleine
